DC; Stargirl Tv Series Episode 1 Review – Season 1
Episode 1 of Stargirl opens with quite a thrill! We’re treated to the fate of the Justice Society, in a flashback set 10 years before the present day. We see Starman’s sidekick Pat Dugan, a.k.a Stripsey, racing towards the outskirts of town while desperately trying to reach his friend on the coms. When he finally gets through, Starman angrily warns him to stay away, before he cries out in pain and the signal is lost. Approaching the building where the JSA are desperately fighting for their lives, we see a jet of green flame shoot out of the roof, then shortly after, a gravely injured Wildcat comes crashing through a window!
Rushing in, Pat witnesses a wrecked battleground, and we see Hourman fighting tigress. He’s taken out by the wizard before he can land the finishing blow, just as dr. midnight is also dragged away by a huge shadowy fist. Pat is almost done for, until he’s saved by the arrival of Starman, who engages the remaining villains, including tigress and Sportsmaster, before he’s fatally wounded by icicle. They barely manage to escape, even as icicle unleashes Solomon Grundy on the fleeing pair. They crash in a forest soon after, and as he succumbs to his wounds, Starman commands pat to keep the legacy of the justice society alive and his weapon, the cosmic staff, safe; he also humorously tells Pat that he’s not fit to wield it, because he lacks grace and heroism. Elsewhere, a young Courtney Whitmore waits in vain for her father to come visit her and her mother on Christmas Eve. We then jump 10 years ahead, into the present setting.
Courtney and her family, including stepfather Pat Dugan, are getting ready to make the big move from California to blue valley, Nebraska. Each member of the family is reacting to this differently, with Courtney outright resenting pat for the move. Once they get to their destination, pat tells the team of movers to be careful with a “special” crate they’re unloading. Afterwards the family goes out for lunch. Later that night, Pat goes to the basement to check on some character files on the Injustice society, as well as a map which has blue valley circled on it.
The next day, Pat drives Courtney to school and tries to bond with her on their way, but she coldly ignores him throughout the drive, and even as he drops her off. Meanwhile, pat goes to check out his new garage and meets an enthusiastic gym owner with a strong grip, who insists he signs up. Courtney’s mother is also starting her new job at the American Dream company, and she’s introduced to some characters who will probably become relevant in the future. Meanwhile, Courtney isn’t having a great day herself. In the span of one school day, she meets the alpha cheerleaders, the jocks, the losers and gets into a fight with the jocks, earning her the hostility of the cheerleaders, as well as detention. She also misses the school bus. Back at home, her younger brother mike is telling Pat about the wonderful day he’s had at school, and Courtney is being her usual sour self.
Later at night she goes down to the basement and kicks a box of pat’s things in frustration, breaking a picture frame, and discovering a photo of the justice society. Here, we get a better picture of the team’s lineup, consisting of the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Wildcat, Hourman, Dr. Fate, Dr. Midnight, Johnny Thunder and his thunderbolt, and finally Starman. She also finds the cosmic staff, which was previously dormant and now seems to be sentient. Freed from its crate, the staff invites her to test it out, and here we see Courtney’s acrobatic prowess on display.
The staff then takes her to a drive-in theatre, where the jocks from school are harassing some nerds. After disguising herself, she tries to mess with the tires of the jock’s car, but she’s caught and has to fight them to escape; but the staff does most of the fighting, including blowing up a car. They soon make an exit. She sneaks back in through the basement where she’s confronted by Pat, and they both come clean about what they’ve been up to, including Pat’s history with the justice society. Courtney makes a connection between Starman and her father both disappearing 10 years ago, (and how the cosmic staff works for her when it’s only supposed to work for Starman) to deduce that Starman was probably her father! Pat disagrees for many reasons, but Courtney still tries to probe her mother about her father’s true identity, only to find out her real feelings about him seemingly abandoning their family. She’s happy with pat and as far as she’s concerned, he’s the only “father” they’ll need.
The final sequence of stargirl episode 1 takes place at brainwave’s opulent mansion, where his son retells his encounter with Stargirl from earlier that night. But brainwave is only interested in the staff and who was using it; after dismissing his son, he calls icicle to tell him what happens, and icicle cautions him to do nothing until his return. He still dons his old costume and goes to investigate the scene of the fight, though. Meanwhile the cosmic staff wakes Courtney up for some more adventure, and as they fly through the night sky, they’re suddenly attacked by car tires hurled at them, crash landing in a tire factory. After being pulled in against her will, Courtney is tortured and interrogated by brainwave, who probes her mind. She manages to knock him back and a brief fight ensues, until she causes an explosion and flees. The episode ends with Courtney fleeing in panic, and once she gets away from the factory, she’s met by a hulking red and white robot, being piloted by none other than Pat!
